Leading in Research - International - Cooperative

The faculty of chemistry and biochemistry at Ruhr-University of Bochum unites highest level research and innovative teaching. We are characterized by a distinctive research profile, modern structures of our courses of studying in the bachelor/master system and a highly international environment.

Our faculty belongs to only a few in Germany that have organized their PhD-courses in a truly international graduate school (Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry - GSCB). Starting as a DAAD-funded project, the GSCB now makes use of synergisms with the RUB-Research School, that was established in Bochum in the course of the excellence initiative. (Main focus: Interfacial Systems Chemistry)

Research Foci

Interfacial Systems Chemistry (IFSC) :
This interdisciplinary research area reaches from small highly reactive molecules to complex biological interacting systems. Crossing the borders of traditional disciplines researchers are working together theoretically as well as experimentally. Molecular systems at surfaces and interfaces with increasing complexity are being studied using precise analytical and theoretical methods.

The initiative "INTCHEM", the only EU founded "Marie Curie - Early Stage Training Site" in the field of chemistry within the recent call, stands for "Non-Covalent Interactions in Chemistry and Biochemistry". With the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulations (ICAMS) and the international Max-Planck Research School SURMAT, we connect to the forefront of materials science research.

Molecular Biochemistry:
Cross linked with Biology, Medicine and the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, and the International Graduate School of Neuroscience (IGSN) we examine structures and processes of biomolecular chemistry.

With these foci and the multifaceted cooperatively supported projects, Bochum's Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry belongs to the top faculties in Northrhein-Westfalia with respect to third party founding. With this our faculty significantly contributes to Ruhr-Universities research strength.

Being a campus-university, Ruhr-University offers short distances and an ideal basis for cooperations across the borders of different disciplines.

Internationalism in research and teaching is an additional plus factor for scientists and students in Bochum. We were the first chemical faculty in Germany that has completely switched to the staged, internationally comparable Bachelor-/Master-system. Today we offer seven different courses of studies and degrees:

  • three bachelor degrees
  • three master degrees
  • one structured PhD course

14 % of our students already come from different countries, our long term goal is a fraction of around 20 % non German students.

Promoting Young Researchers

We offer ideal conditions for interdisciplinary and international research to young scientists - PhD-students, junior professors, "habilitationists" and junior teams.

Within our Graduate School of Chemistry and Biochemistry 200 young scientists from all over the world are now doing research. Furthermore, we participate in RUB's International Graduate School of Neuroscience (IGSN) - the "open faculty" for PhD-students in neuro science and brain research - as well as in Bochum's central Research School for young scientists of all faculties and the international Max-Planck Research School for Surface and Interface Engineering in Advanced Materials (SURMAT) in Düsseldorf.
Plus-factors of these graduate schools are

  • the structured PhD-courses
  • an optimal mentoring
  • an international environment
  • the offered lectures and colloquia held in English throughout the course of studies
  • the introduction to interdisciplinary key qualifications ("soft skills")

Further Activities

Within a network of a plethora of cooperations on the campus and beyond, we are active in all aspects of "lifelong learning", for example:

  • Alfried Krupp-Schülerlabor: With eleven projects in Chemistry and three interdisciplinary projects, our faculty is one of the pillars of the practical lab for children aged 11-18.
