Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

The foundation course of the chemistry course of studies can be successfully completed after six semesters with the first step of professional qualification, the Bachelor of Science. According to the study plan, the focal point course is concluded after 10 semesters with the Master of Science (Chemistry). Fields of activity for graduates of the Master's course of studies lie within research and development as well as in the processing of application-orientated problems. The Master of Science (Chemistry) opens up possibilities for independent research with the aim of obtaining a doctor's degree. Bachelor's graduates who have qualified themselves to a high standard can also be admitted directly to the doctorate course of studies.

The basic course of studies in the Bachelor's course is characterised by lectures, exercises, seminars and practicals. In part 1 (1st - 4th semester), it imparts basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry as well as physical, analytical and organic chemistry. In addition, there are also courses in biochemistry, technical and theoretical chemistry as well as mathematics and physics. Part 2 (5th - 6th semester) is intended to consolidate knowledge in: Inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, structural analysis, synthetic chemistry as well as electives in biochemistry, analytical, technical or theoretical chemistry.

As well as the compulsory programme, alternative courses are on offer in the 5th and 6th semester that can be combined: Applied information technology, business studies and law, other natural sciences, the philosophy of natural sciences as well as foreign languages. The Bachelor's thesis deals with subject matter taken from the practicals in the 5th or 6th semester or from an area of the additional subjects.
In the 7th to 10th semester (Master's course of studies), focal points are created. They can be chosen from:

  • Inorganic chemistry
  • Organic and supramolecular chemistry
  • Physical chemistry
  • Analytical chemistry
  • Technical chemistry
  • Theoretical chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Functional materials
