International Doctorate Programme

International Doctorate Programme

The Graduate School offers a strongly research-oriented doctorate programme in chemistry and biochemistry which leads to the degree Dr. rer. nat. (Ph.D.). The programme is structured into a 1-year qualifiying phase (preparatory training) and a 3-year research course of studies. This allows for admission with a Bachelor as well as a Master degree.

Research Course

The 3-year research course is designed for students who have obtained an above average Master degree in chemistry, biochemistry of strongly related field. Scientific research in the laboratory is accompanied by taught elements, including an interdisciplinary lecture programme given by guest scientists and the training of generic skills in research management and scientific communication. The final research thesis must be defended in front of a scientific audience.

Preparatory Training

The 1-year preparatory course caters only for exceptionally well qualified students with an outstanding Bachelor degree in chemistry or biochemistry. It is designed to create the necessary scientific basis for independent research studies in the 3-year research course. The curricula of the preparatory training courses in chemistry and biochemistry are very closely related to those of the respective Master courses in the first year, so that most classes will be attended together with M.Sc. students. Only successful completion of the entire preparatory training, i.e. 60 credit points with average grade "first class", allows for direct admission to the research course. A basic knowledge of German is highly recommended.
